Arial shots of Indonesian devastation (by SSgt Smith)
Flying over a landing zone
in a town we called Meulaboh.
We fly over most LZ's prior to landing to ensure the zone is clear of obstacles
and personnel.
A bridge in Meulaboh about
a half mile off the coast line. The Tsunami ripped the bridge apart.
In many places, it ripped sections out of the road and left anyone alive starving
for food and water.
(Note the makeshift ferry
above the bridge.)
What used to be homes for
the Indonesian people - about 1 mile off the coast line.
Not only did the water do damage here but the earthquake was devastating as
well.
Our LZ for dropping off many medical supplies and food and water was next
to these houses.
A barge up near the city
of Bande Aceh. This barge was slammed ashore by the massive wave.
A CH-46E helicopter flying
south of Meulaboh to an airfield where we dropped off approximately half of
our supplies.
There were Indonesian military working there as well as many survivors waiting
for food, water, and medical supplies.
A mosque about 1/4 mile
off the coast line.
There were many mosques that surprisingly stood alone amongst all the fallen
homes.
