The 5-second user test

It sounded strange to me, but I get it now. And I can’t wait to use it!

Christine Perfetti’s article over at UIE on 5-Second Tests: Measuring Your Site’s Content Pages presents a great method for testing web pages.

While Jakob Nielsen can talk about doing user testing on the cheap, what folks rarely hear is just how much time it takes, especially if it’s your first time. This is what keeps most smaller organizations from conducting them.

I only started them at Youth Specialties after I had three Internet dept. staff members and the time to learn and conduct them. It’s a lot of work.

But SO worth it.

For those who just can’t make that kind of commitment, this 5-second test is a nice alternative. BUT…it’s not for testing everything. Note Christine’s warnings in the article. It’s really for testing a page that has one purpose to it – donate, sign up, register, etc.

Try it, and lemmeno how it works for you…
